Private Equity-Backed Barristers Group Launches Tech-Driven Clerking Platform

Private equity-backed legal chambers network The Barrister Group (TBG) has officially entered the outsourced services market, announcing the rollout of its new VENTRiQ platform—an outsourced clerking service built on TBG’s in-house operations infrastructure. The London-based group, which supports hundreds of remotely working barristers across the UK, says the service reflects growing demand from chambers and lawyers for scalable operational support. TBG CEO Emily Foges, the former chief executive of legaltech pioneer Luminance , said the initiative grew out of the need for greater collaboration and efficiency among chambers. “We work closely with the Bar Standards Board (BSB) , and we’re always pushing the boundaries of what clerking and chambers should be in the modern era,” Foges said. “As data privacy, cyber security, and compliance demands increase, small chambers face rising operational pressures that collaboration can help alleviate.” The VENTRiQ service—formally launched at TBG’s 2026 Spring Conference in London this week—handles functions such as credit control, billing, regulatory compliance, and cybersecurity. The model allows chambers to offload key administrative tasks while paying a percentage-based fee from processed work. At present, around 600 barristers and mediators and 30 clerks are using the platform, with two external chambers already adopting the system under white-label agreements. TBG currently acts for over 3,000 law firms and 5,000 private clients annually, processing more than 2,000 new cases each month. The group rebranded from Clerksroom in 2023, becoming the first barristers’ chambers to receive private equity financing following a minority investment from LDC , the private equity arm of Lloyds Bank. Founded in 2001 by Harry Hodgkin and Stephen Ward, TBG has been a leading innovator at the Bar—one of the few to combine technology and private capital in chambers operations. Hodgkin now serves as non-executive director, with Ward as commercial director. The launch underscores a continuing trend in the UK’s legal sector: technology-enabled chambers operations and outsourced service models becoming increasingly central to the post-pandemic legal economy. What Outsourced Clerking Means for Chambers Outsourced clerking represents a growing shift in how UK chambers manage their practice administration. Traditionally, clerks handled everything from diary management to fee negotiation within each chambers. But as technology and compliance demands rise, more sets are adopting shared or external clerking models — often delivered through cloud-based legal operations platforms like TBG’s VENTRiQ . The model allows barristers and chambers to reduce administrative overhead, enhance cyber and regulatory compliance, and scale client service without the full-time staffing burden. It’s part of a broader trend toward outsourced legal operations seen across the legal profession, where chambers use technology and collaboration to stay competitive in a cost-conscious marketplace.
