SAN DIEGO, June 15, 2004 – LAWFUEL – Cooley Godward is pleased to announce
that Steve Swinton has been named chair of the Firm’s Intellectual Property
Litigation practice. As chair, Mr. Swinton will work closely with colleagues
Frank Pietrantonio, chair of the Patent Counseling & Prosecution practice, and
Anne Peck, chair of the Trademark, Copyright & Advertising practice.

department. “Steve has tremendous leadership qualities and a deep commitment
to team work which enables him to bring together resources across our firm to
provide our clients with the highest quality strategic advice and
representation in litigation.”

A 10-year veteran of Cooley Godward and a resident in the Firm’s San Diego
office, Mr. Swinton is an accomplished IP trial lawyer who has tried to
verdict numerous patent, copyright and trade secret cases across the country.
He is a member of the patent bar and has represented clients across a wide
array of industries, including electronics, telecommunications, software,
pharmaceutical and biotechnology. He has been listed in “The Best Lawyers in
America” every year since 1993.

Mr. Swinton graduated second in his law school class, receiving his J.D.,
with honors, from Drake University Law School in 1982. He was admitted to the
State Bar of California later that year. While in law school, he was elected
to the Order of the Coif and was an active member of the Moot Court Board and
law review. Mr. Swinton also served as an extern to the Hon. Roy L.
Stephenson, Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals, Eighth Circuit.

He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Operations from
Iowa State University in 1973. After graduation, Mr. Swinton served with
distinction as a Surface Line Officer (Surface Warfare Specialist) in the
United States Navy. Following his service in the Navy, Mr. Swinton worked as a
process and manufacturing engineer with Procter & Gamble.

In addition, Mr. Swinton has served as a faculty member for the National
Institute of Trial Advocacy (NITA). He has also been active in various bar
associations, particularly in the field of legal ethics, having served as a
member of the California State Bar Association Committee on Professional
Responsibility and Conduct (“COPRAC”).
