SHANGHAI, China, May 10 – LAWFUEL – Global law firm Squire, Sanders &
Dempsey L.L.P. is adding Shanghai to its network of offices in Asia.
Squire Sanders recently received a license for an office in Shanghai from
the Ministry of Justice of The People’s Republic of China. With a presence in
Asia since the 1950s, Squire Sanders has long counseled clients with business
interests in China. The firm has offices in Beijing and Hong Kong, as well as
Shanghai.
“Shanghai is the commercial heart of the world’s most dynamic economy,”
said Dan Roules, who will be chief representative in the firm’s Shanghai
office. He said that inbound investment and reinvestment in China are destined
to grow. The reforms of the past 20 years have particularly revitalized
Shanghai, from the city’s booming steel industry to its strong petrochemical
industry to Shanghai’s growing service sector.
“Financial services, technology, commerce, real estate and
telecommunications are some of the key sectors for development, along with the
more traditional manufacturing and hospitality industry sectors,” Roules said.
“Squire Sanders’ multinational clients are very focused on China’s growth and
extraordinary prospects.”
Squire Sanders Chairman R. Thomas Stanton added that the China practice is
central to Squire Sanders’ strategic plan for its multinational clientele.
Squire Sanders has been a presence in Asia since the 1950s through the
2000 combination with Graham & James L.L.P.
“In 2003, we doubled the Beijing office’s professional staff with the
addition of James M. Zimmerman and Sungbo Shim and supporting lawyers,”
Stanton said. “We recognize the importance to our clients of an on-the-ground
presence in Asia, and we will continue to focus on our capabilities in that
region.”
Roules and national partner Amy Sommers will staff the Shanghai office
initially and manage the rapid growth that is anticipated for the office. They
will be supported by 11 legal professionals in the Beijing office, Hong Kong
and Tokyo and the resources of approximately 700 lawyers throughout the
international firm.
