Squire, Sanders & Dempsey L.L.P. is enhancing its ability to serve clients with interests in post-conflict Iraq by partnering with a Kuwaiti law firm and adding a lawyer who has extensive Middle East experience.

Squire Sanders, which currently represents companies rebuilding Iraq, today announced its affiliation with M.M. Al-Ghazali & Partners. In addition, Daniel Q. Callister, legal counsel for the Kuwait-America Foundation, has joined Squire Sanders as of counsel.

“Mishari M. Al-Ghazali and his multi-national team of lawyers from the Middle East will enable us to provide legal counsel, and equally important, make introductions for clients entering Iraq or otherwise doing business in the Gulf Region,” said Joseph P. Markoski. M.M. Al-Ghazali & Partners is a full-service international law firm established in 1992.

Markoski, head of Squire Sanders’ regulatory practice, is in Kuwait. He and Thomas J. Ramsey, a senior telecommunications partner and former State Department official now resident in Brussels, are coordinating the firm’s activities in Kuwait. Markoski and Ramsey are among the four Squire Sanders lawyers now in Kuwait.

“This is a unique opportunity,” said Ramsey. “Squire Sanders is among the first international law firms to be working on behalf of clients on matters in post-conflict Iraq.”

“Dan Callister provides unique expertise and on-the-ground experience by virtue of his more than 10 years of involvement in Kuwait on a wide range of legal matters and his work with the Kuwait-America Foundation.” Markoski said. The Kuwait-America Foundation is a charitable organization established in the wake of the first Gulf War to strengthen ties between the United States and Kuwait. Callister is one of the Foundation’s three founders, serves on the board of trustees and the Foundation’s executive committee and is its legal counsel.

“Squire Sanders has decades of experience rebuilding infrastructure,” said James J. Maiwurm, the firm’s managing partner, who is overseeing Squire Sanders’ global program to help clients evaluate opportunities in post-conflict Iraq. “Squire Sanders lawyers have worked extensively with the governments of Central and Eastern Europe and the republics of the former Soviet Union. Our experience there will guide us as we assist clients interested in participating in the redevelopment and democratization of Iraq.”

In addition, Squire Sanders’ attorneys have more than 20 years of experience working in the Middle East, including a comprehensive review and analysis of the Kuwaiti legal system recently undertaken on behalf of a Kuwaiti government instrumentality.

Maiwurm said the firm will draw on its global expertise in energy, environmental, telecommunications, transportation, water, real estate and health care law to assist clients. He added that the firm’s experience with emerging economies can help mitigate clients’ potential risks and pursue legal claims.
