Steptoe & Johnson LLP has elected Roger E. Warin as the new Chairman of the firm’s Executive Committee and Douglas G. Green as the Committee’s Vice-Chair, effective March 1. They will succeed J.A. “Lon” Bouknight and Mike Kail in these positions of leadership.

“We are pleased that Roger and Doug are taking over the reins today,” said Mr. Bouknight. “Mike and I have enjoyed the experience of leading this firm over the past six years. We are confident that under Roger and Doug’s leadership Steptoe will continue to grow and prosper while preserving the values that make this a great place to come to work each day.”

Mr. Warin who for the past six years has headed Steptoe’s Litigation Department will continue his very active complex commercial litigation practice during his tenure as Chairman.

Mr. Warin and Mr. Green will focus on maintaining Steptoe’s exceptionally high quality of practice and the firm’s forward momentum.

“The firm is doing very well,” observed Mr. Warin. “Our plan is to continue to build on our strengths by adding high caliber laterals to our core practice groups. We are planning on strategic growth which makes sense from the standpoint of client service. We are open to the idea of expanding the geographic footprint of the firm in the coming years in locations where it will assist in servicing clients and makes business sense.”

Mr. Green, who handles major matters in the fields of electric power and commercial litigation, stressed his enthusiasm for working in tandem with Mr. Warin in the years ahead.

“Roger and I will make a very strong team,” said Mr. Green. “I expect that Steptoe will continue to thrive as he and I work together to grow and enhance our already strong and dynamic national and international presence. Roger and I are looking forward to partnering together in this very important effort.”

Mr. Warin has litigated cases in federal and state courts throughout the country, as well as in the International Trade Commission, arbitration panels, contract appeals boards, and regulatory and licensing panels. These cases have involved trademark and unfair trade practices disputes, securities fraud, RICO claims, libel, products liability, directors’ and officers’ liability, voting rights, employment discrimination, attorneys’ fees, First Amendment, professional liability, negligence, real estate, surety, construction, environmental, toxic tort, and insurance and reinsurance disputes. Mr. Warin has a national reputation for representing insurers in major coverage disputes. In recent years, he has taken the lead in numerous major nationwide insurance coverage disputes involving asbestos, toxic substances and environmental claims. He has also represented numerous national and regional law firms in defense of legal malpractice claims and is recognized as one of the leading legal malpractice defense lawyers in the Washington metropolitan area.

Mr. Warin is a successful appellate advocate, having argued more than twenty cases throughout the country in federal circuit courts of appeals and state supreme courts. He frequently writes and speaks on insurance and reinsurance issues, legal malpractice claims, and attorneys’ fees litigation. Mr. Warin is a board member of the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs having served as Co-Chair from 2000-2002.

Mr. Green represents domestic and international companies in the electric power sector in a broad spectrum of matters, including antitrust, mergers, restructuring, commercial transactions, and economic regulation. A graduate of Georgetown University Law Center, he is recognized as one of the leading competition lawyers in the field and is Chairman of the Fuel and Energy Committee of the American Bar Association’s Antitrust Section.

Mr. Green’s litigation practice encompasses a wide range of complex civil matters, including toxic and mass torts; fraud; commercial disputes, and antitrust. He has substantial experience in alternative dispute resolution, including serving as lead trial counsel for plaintiffs in the litigation over the shutdown of the Peach Bottom Nuclear plant, one of the largest matters ever resolved via a mini-trial. Mr. Green writes and lectures frequently on electric power and litigation management issues.
