The Office of the Chief Tax Counsel provides technical leadership to the Commissioner of Inland Revenue and to the department as a whole. It aims to be recognised as a centre of excellence by Inland Revenue, taxpayers and their agents.

We are seeking to appoint to permanent positions, or otherwise seeking expressions of interest for a secondment between six and twelve months duration. You will be part of a high performing team responsible for researching and analysing technical tax issues arising in private and product ruling applications. The work is technically challenging, involving finely balanced legal issues, most often in relation to major business transactions. It will include reviewing complex structured finance arrangements and considering the application of avoidance provisions to those arrangements.

To be successful in this position, you will require a good knowledge of tax law, strong statutory interpretation skills, and an ability to demonstrate sound judgment. Graduates or those with limited experience are welcome to apply for Assistant Analyst positions. We are also looking for experience in commercial law (preferably in tax); with a minimum of two years experience for appointment at Analyst level and four years or more for a Senior Analyst or Senior Advisor appointment. You should also have an above average qualification in law.

This role will give you intellectual stimulation and a breadth of taxation experience, while being supported by a flexible and collegial environment. We focus on developing our people so that they have the skills and attributes to excel in a complex work environment.
The salary range is $39,000 – $60,000 for appointment at Assistant Analyst level, $59,000 – $80,000 for Analyst, $76,000 – $99,000 for Senior Analyst, and $97,000 – $119,000 for Senior Advisor. We would consider an appointment on a part-time basis, or outside of Wellington, if the successful candidate prefers.
