Will Offer Counsel in Public Strategy Group and Focus on Cross Border Opportunities in Energy, Technology and Life Sciences

BOSTON- LAWFUEL – Legal News Network –Sept. 13, 2006–McCarter & English, LLP announces today that Paul Cellucci, former US Ambassador to Canada and Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, has joined the Firm as Special Counsel in the area of Public Strategy. Leveraging his impressive breadth of experience, Cellucci will focus on the areas of life sciences, energy and technology, unveiling opportunities for the Firm that reflect McCarter & English’s reputation for constantly seeking innovative, efficient and effective ways to attain client’s goals.

“Given his extensive and distinguished record in the public sector, Paul is acutely aware of the advisory services and counsel that businesses need to grow in the current economy,” said John McKelway, Boston Office Managing Partner at McCarter & English. “His thorough understanding of the Canadian market and his high level relationships with government and business leaders in the US and Canada will make a tremendous contribution to the continued growth of McCarter & English.”

Cellucci brings extensive business and public service experience to his new role. He most recently served as executive vice president of corporate development at Magna Entertainment Corporation, where he played a leadership role in the Company’s efforts to bring about regulatory reform. In his prior role as US Ambassador to Canada, Cellucci worked for four years to strengthen and grow the trading relationship between the United States and Canada, expediting border crossings for commercial and passenger vehicles, continuing the integration of the North American energy market and helping resolve trade disputes. This was particularly challenging after the September 11th attacks, when security became the Embassy’s top priority. Cellucci was named Ambassador after completing 31 years as an elected official, including serving as Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts from 1997 to 2001 and Lieutenant Governor from 1991 to 1997.

“McCarter’s Public Strategy Group has a well-known reputation throughout the East Coast for high stakes problem solving – and that comes in many forms, from high profile litigation, to government relations, to working with clients on strategies to grow their business,” said Cellucci. “During my years in Canada, a major focus was growing the trade relationship between Canada and the US, the world’s largest international trading relationship. With offices throughout the Eastern seaboard, McCarter gives me an ideal platform to help businesses seize the cross-border opportunities available to them in today’s global economy.”

Ambassador Cellucci received his law degree from Boston College Law School in 1973. In 1970, he graduated from the Boston College School of Management, where he served in the Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC). He also served in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1970 until 1978, when he was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain.
