14 February 2006 – LAWFUEL – The Law News Network – Fifty-Three Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw LLP lawyers are listed in the 2006 Chambers Global guide to leading business lawyers. The guide highlights the firm’s work in nearly two dozen practice areas throughout the U.S., Europe, Africa, Latin America, and Asia. A complement to the Chambers USA and Chambers UK Guides which come out later in the year, the Global Guide highlights practices serving worldwide markets.

Chambers gave the firm high marks in such areas as antitrust, arbitration, litigation, international trade, European law, private equity, capital markets, energy, intellectual property, tax, real estate, restructuring, telecom, broadcast, and satellite work.

“This is one of the premier law firms in the USA according to clients,” said Chambers of the firm’s corporate practice. “The merger in 2002 of US giant Mayer Brown & Platt and the UK’s Rowe & Maw remains one of the most successful transatlantic mergers to date. The merged firm now offers offices across seven US and six European cities. This, coupled with strength across the board – you get partners who are at the top of their field and then a broad and deep team of associates to back it up, makes for a very fine firm.”

“Some of the reasons cited for this international giant’s position . are its great sense of the market, involvement in the mega-deals and expertise in project finance and emerging markets, especially Latin America,” said Chambers Global in describing the firm’s U.S. banking & finance practice. “The firm’s size and culture has enabled it to adapt well to changes in the Chicago-based banking market and the increasing specialisation in the securitisation markets. Likewise, competitors regard the New York group as an important player in the market. The team has also developed close synergies with its offices in leading financial centres, such as London and Frankfurt.”

Chambers said of the firm’s outsourcing practice: “The outstanding features of this firm’s practice are its impressive international network, allowing it to handle the most global transactions, and the strength of its outsourcing practice, an area where it is one of the out-and-out national leaders. In this latter area, peers acknowledge that it remains a first port of call simply because there are so many people there who have been doing it for a long time.”

Chambers praised the firm’s Germany finance practice: “It has enjoyed particular success in the NPL market where it advised on some of the biggest deals of the year, notably acting for Lone Star on the acquisition of a portfolio of real estate loans from Hypo Real Estate worth ?3.6 billion.”

In France, Chambers noted the firm’s private equity practice: “The Anglo-US giant was described by competitors as really starting to enter the market and pick up deals, and is widely tipped to be the firm to watch in French private equity circles.”
