15 December 2004 LAWFUEL – Best for law firm news, attorneys, law, legal research, international trade news Clifford Chance LLP sponsored the keynote address “The Doha Round: Where we are and our future prospects” by Dr Supachai Panitchpakdi, the Director General of the World Trade Organisation, at Claridge’s today (3 p.m.). Senior Partner, Stuart Popham, who introduced this keynote speech said:

“It is an honour for Clifford Chance to sponsor this event
organised by the ASEAN-UK Business Forum.

We are pleased that the WTO has made substantial progress in
the Doha Round, most recently at the Geneva talks in July.

As a lawyer working with both international corporations and
governments around the world, it has been my own personal experience that
the removal of trade barriers and the increase in international trade has
led to increased prosperity in many developing countries.”
Mr Popham also referred to the challenges ahead for the WTO and the global
community, including increased regulation that might indirectly discriminate
against poorer countries.

This important and timely address by Dr Panitchpakdi gave insight into the
current status of the world trade negotiations and its future prospects, and
profiled the implications for developed and developing countries.
