16 September – LAWFUEL – The Law News Network – Thirty high-achieving young people from non-traditional backgrounds have become the first cohort of students to complete the Global Graduates’ ‘Young Graduates for Lawyers’ scheme.
The programme, which is sponsored by Linklaters and The Sutton Trust, encourages talented A-level students from non-traditional backgrounds to realise their ambitions of pursuing a career in law.
To mark their achievements, the A-level students from 25 different schools across London will be presented with certificates by Linklaters managing partner Tony Angel and Sir Peter Lampl, chairman of The Sutton Trust, during a reception held at Linklaters on Thursday 15 September.
Tony Angel, managing partner of Linklaters, said:
“Linklaters is delighted to support Global Graduates’ ‘Young Graduates for Lawyers’ scheme, now entering its second year. As a global organisation, our clients, partners and staff come from many backgrounds. In order to achieve our goals, we aim to have an inclusive culture in which individuals from different cultures and with different skills and perspectives work together in teams to provide excellent solutions for our clients.
“We believe that the Global Graduates scheme provides students with the experience and opportunities they need to succeed in a City law firm, and have recently offered six training contracts and four vacation scheme placements to students who have come via the Global Graduates scheme.”
Sir Peter Lampl, chairman of The Sutton Trust, said:
“The Sutton Trust is supporting the ‘Young Graduates for Lawyers’ programme because of its emphasis on academic aspiration and attainment and focus on ‘soft skills’ development, such as interpersonal and presentation skills, which are vital in the professional workplace.”
Bilen Ainealem, one of the students who has completed the Young Graduates for Lawyers scheme, said:
“Global Graduates has given me valuable advice concerning my career aspirations as well as my education, which was not available from my college. This will ensure I am a strong competitor in university and the world of work.”
