23 June – LAWFUEL – The Law News Network – R. Alexander Acosta, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, and Keith Perniciaro, Acting Special Agent in Charge, Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), announced today that defendant, Suresh Bobby Gopaul, was sentenced by United States District Court Judge Kenneth A. Marra to a term of forty-one (41) months in prison, followed by three (3) years of supervised release, on charges that he illegally re-entered the United States after having been deported. Gopaul will be deported to Trinidad and Tobago after completion of his sentence.
Gopaul is a native and citizen of Trinidad. On April 1, 1985, he was convicted of sexual assault and was sentenced to twelve (12) years’ imprisonment. On March 6, 1991, Gopaul was deported from the United States to Trinidad. On August 18, 2004, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents received information that “Bobby Khan” was an alias currently being used by Suresh Bobby Gopaul in South Florida. Further investigation confirmed that Gopaul was indeed living in South Florida, under the alias “Bobby Khan.” Gopaul was subsequently arrested on March 7, 2005, at his residence in Miramar. On April 7, 2005, Gopaul pleaded guilty to a one (1) count Indictment, charging him with illegal re-entry after deportation, in violation of Title 8, United States Code, Section 1326(a)(b)(2).
Mr. Acosta commended the efforts of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents that investigated this case. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Jennifer Keene Lovemore.
