26 August – LAWFUEL – The Law News Network – R. Alexander Acosta, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, Michael S. Clemens, Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Robert O’Neil, Chief, Jupiter Police Department, announced that defendant, Kathy Jo Williams, a/k/a Kathy Jo Anderson, plead guilty before United States District Court Judge Daniel T. K. Hurley today in federal court in West Palm Beach, Florida to a criminal Information charging her with one (1) count of wire fraud, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 1343. Williams faces a statutory maximum penalty of up to twenty (20) years’ imprisonment as well as up to $250,000 in fines and mandatory restitution at sentencing.

As alleged in the Information, between 1999 and 2004, Williams provided materially false information to certain investors by telling them that the money that they invested with her would be used to purchase the contents of estate sales, which could be quickly resold for a substantial profit. According to the Information, at least nineteen (19) different individuals invested funds totaling over $1 million with Williams in the belief that they would receive substantial profits on their investments within a short time frame. Instead of investing the money as promised, Williams used the investors’ money for her own personal use, or to support a company that she had created, the “Betty Series,” which was in the business of promoting women’s surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding competitions.

Mr. Acosta commended the investigative efforts of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Jupiter Police Department. This case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Lauren Jorgensen.
