6 December 2004 – LAWFUEL – First with law news – Marcos Daniel Jiménez, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida; Jesus Torres, Special Agent in Charge, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE); and Robert J. Joura, Acting Special Agent in Charge, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), announced today that certain members of the media have misinterpreted and taken out of context some statements made by Mr. Jiménez at the press conference in Miami held on December 6, 2004.
Neither Mr. Jiménez nor any one else stated or implied that the defendant Gilberto Rodriguez-Orejuela would be tried or face charges solely related to pre-1997 acts. For further clarification, the defendant Gilberto Rodriguez-Orejuela will be tried in federal court in the United States only on the charges on which he was extradited to the United States. The United States will fully honor its commitments and obligations under the extradition orders issued by the Republic of Colombia in regard to Gilberto Rodriguez-Orejuela and all other defendants who are extradited from Colombia to the United States. Any interpretation of statements made on behalf of the United States that deviates from this position is not correct.
