7 March 2005 – LAWFUEL – The Law News Network – International law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer announced today that Terry Calvani will join its Washington office as Of Counsel to its antitrust, competition and trade (ACT) group.

Mr Calvani, a former Commissioner and Acting Chairman of the US Federal Trade Commission, joins Freshfields from the Irish Competition Authority, where he has served as Member and Director of the Cartels Division since 2002. He brings to Freshfields over 30 years of US and international private practice, academic, and antitrust enforcement experience.

Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer launched its US antitrust practice in May 2002 with the appointment to partnership of Paul Yde and M.J. Moltenbrey in Washington, supported by the secondment of partner Alan Ryan from the Brussels office. The team was expanded by the appointment to the partnership of Robert Schlossberg in June 2004. The US team is an integral part of an international group of more than more than 250 antitrust, competition and trade specialists based in fifteen countries. Freshfields’ ACT practice is one of the world’s largest and is widely recognised to be at the forefront of antitrust and competition law.

Terry Calvani became a Member of the Irish Competition Authority and Director of the Cartels Division in 2002. Previously he was a partner in the antitrust practice group of Pillsbury Winthrop LLP resident in both its San Francisco and Washington, D.C., offices. Mr. Calvani was Commissioner of the US Federal Trade Commission (1983-1990) and was acting Chairman of the Commission during 1985 and 1986.

Following his graduation from the Cornell Law School, where he was Articles Editor of the Law Review, he practiced with the Pillsbury firm in San Francisco. From 1974-1983, Mr. Calvani was Professor of Law at Vanderbilt School of Law teaching courses on antitrust law. More recently he has taught antitrust law at Duke University School of Law (2000); the Harvard Law School (1998-2001); and at Trinity College Dublin (2004-2005).

Mr. Calvani is the author of a book and numerous articles and has lectured at many seminars on antitrust issues. He has served as chairman of several committees within the ABA Antitrust Section and on its governing council. He is a member of the American Law Institute, serves on the advisory board of the Antitrust Bulletin, and has been a member of the Administrative Conference of the United States.

While in private practice, Mr. Calvani has worked on acquisitions/joint ventures in a very large number of industries and their review by numerous competition agencies. He has participated in civil and criminal non-merger investigations in many industries by both federal and state authorities. He has also provided antitrust counselling to a large number of companies and several trade associations.
