Friday 28 July 2006 06- LAWFUEL – Law News Network – Mr Scot Weston, an insurance broker, appeared before the Wollongong Local Court yesterday on eleven charges following an investigation by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC). Mr Weston did not enter a plea to the charges of dishonest conduct and obtaining a benefit by deception. The charges were laid after an ASIC investigation into the activities of Interre Insurance Brokers Pty Ltd, Hirtes Insurance Brokers Pty Ltd and Mr Weston’s conduct as an insurance broker. Mr Weston is alleged to have engaged in dishonest conduct in his dealings as an insurance broker and, as a result, obtaining a benefit by deception. It is alleged that between 1 June and 27 August 2002, Mr Weston engaged in dishonest conduct in relation to a financial product when he forwarded documents to a number of insureds that claimed to set out details of an insurance policy underwritten by Lloyds of London when no such policy existed. It is also alleged that between 6 June 2002 and 4 March 2003, Mr Weston deceptively forwarded documents to a number of insureds and the Department of Tourism, Sport and Recreation that claimed to set out details of insurance policies, leading to the payment of premiums and the issue of licences by the NSW Minister for Sport and Recreation. Mr Weston is to reappear before the Wollongong Local Court on 14 September 2006 for mention. The Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions is prosecuting the matter. ASIC’s investigation is continuing.
