PHOENIX (LAWFUEL) – Hasham Wael Shawky, 19, of Glendale, Ariz., was sentenced yesterday to 156 months in federal prison by U.S. District Judge Frederick J. Martone. Shawky pleaded guilty to Assault of a Postal Employee on September 23, 2008. Shawky’s sentence will run concurrently with sentences previously imposed in Arizona Superior Court on related charges.
On August 9, 2007, a U.S. Postal Service employee was driving a Postal Service vehicle and delivering mail on her regular route when she made a stop on North 36th Avenue in Phoenix. The Postal employee was approached by Shawky who displayed a knife and demanded the Postal employee “get out of the vehicle.” Fearing for her life, the postal carrier left her vehicle. Shawky then took the vehicle and fled the area. Shawky was later located and arrested by Phoenix Police Officers. The employee was uninjured as a result of the incident.
The investigation in this case was conducted by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the Phoenix Police Department. The prosecution was handled by Thomas C. Simon, Assistant U.S. Attorney, District of Arizona, Phoenix.
