ATLANTA (May 16) — Kilpatrick Stockton announced today that senior Partner Michael W. Tyler has been named to the MARTA Board of Directors. Fulton County Commissioners approved his appointment May 2. Mr. Tyler will represent Fulton County during his four-year term. The MARTA Board of Directors consists of 18 members representing the City of Atlanta, DeKalb, Fulton, Clayton and Gwinnett Counties, and the State of Georgia and is responsible for setting policy and making decisions for the Authority ranging from finance to customer service.
“The Fulton County Board of Commissioners is pleased to have been able to appoint someone with Mr. Tyler’s legal experience and knowledge of transportation issues to the MARTA board,” said Fulton County Commission Chairman John H. Eaves. “He is a well respected business and community leader and able to represent all Fulton County citizens while serving in this governance role. Addressing the transportation needs of our county and the region are extremely critical to the future, and we believe Mr. Tyler is the best candidate to aid in this task. We greatly appreciate his willingness to volunteer for this level of service”.
Mr. Tyler joined Kilpatrick Stockton following a judicial clerkship with U.S. Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals Judge James C. Hill. He practices extensively in the areas of complex business litigation and land use law.
Mr. Tyler earned his J.D. degree from Harvard Law School where he was an Earl Warren Scholar. He also received a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard University, John F. Kennedy School of Government. Mr. Tyler earned his B.A. degree from Morehouse College, graduating summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa.
Mr. Tyler currently serves as chairman of the Kilpatrick Stockton Attorney Diversity Team. In this capacity he has been instrumental in establishing the Freedom Writers mentoring program involving 150 students at Booker T. Washington High School.
Mr. Tyler also currently serves on the Board of Directors/Trustees of the Piedmont Park Conservancy, The Children’s School, the National Black Arts Festival, Providence Missionary Baptist Church, the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and the Georgia Supreme Court’s Committee on Civil Justice. His previous civic contributions include service on the Board of Directors of the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority (appointed by Governor Roy Barnes), the Atlanta Zoning Review Board (appointed by Mayor Andrew Young), the State Disciplinary Board of the State Bar of Georgia, the Atlanta Urban League and Economic Opportunity Atlanta. Mr. Tyler has been named to “Who’s Who in Atlanta” by the Atlanta Business Chronicle, Georgia’s “Legal Elite” by Georgia Trend Magazine, and Georgia’s “Super Lawyers” by James Magazine.
Mr. Tyler is married to Cathy Clark Tyler, who serves as Director of Media Advocacy for the American Cancer Society. Michael and Cathy have three sons, Michael Jr., Malcolm, and Matthew.
