LawFuel – NZ + Australian Legal Jobs and Legal NewsWire – A joint Australian Federal Police (AFP) and Customs operation has resulted in the arrest of two men and the seizure of a range of drugs on the Sunshine Coast.
The operation began on December 14 when Customs officers intercepted a parcel from the Netherlands at the Sydney international mail facility. The parcel was destined for a Sunshine Beach address in Queensland.
Customs officers allegedly discovered a block of off-white paste, which returned a preliminary positive result for amphetamine, in the parcel. The total weight of the amphetamines allegedly found in the parcel was 1.058 kilograms.
AFP agents substituted the substance with an inert material and monitored the delivery of the parcel to a residence in Buderim, Queensland.
As a result the AFP yesterday executed search warrants on two separate properties in Buderim, where they allegedly found an additional 250 grams of amphetamine, 200 LSD tablets and a small quantity of cannabis.
A 52-year-old man and a 32-year old man were arrested and charged with aiding and abetting the importation of a border controlled drug as well as attempting to possess a marketable quantity of a border controlled drug. Both offences fall under the Commonwealth Criminal Code Act 1995.
Both men appeared before Maroochydore Watch House on 20 December where they were bailed to reappear on 10 January 2008 at Maroochydore Magistrates Court.
The maximum penalty for these offences is 25 years imprisonment.
