BALTIMORE – October 24, 2005 – LAWFUEL – The Law News Network – M. Hamilton (“Tony”) Whitman, Jr., prominent Maryland lawyer and a principal in the law firm of Ober, Kaler, Grimes & Shriver, has been inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers.
Mr. Whitman was selected for this distinction after a careful examination of his experience and character. Fellowship in the College is by invitation only, and is extended to certain experienced trial lawyers who have demonstrated exceptional skill as advocates and whose professional careers have been marked by the highest standards of ethical conduct, professionalism, and civility.
The ACTL is widely considered to be the premier legal professional organization in the United States. Mr. Whitman, the sixth Ober|Kaler attorney to receive this prestigious recognition, joins fellow principals John Wolf, Thomas Washburne and Manfred Leckszas, and former principals Jervis Finney and Randall Coleman.

Mr. Whitman’s induction took place at the ACTL annual meeting in Chicago, on October 22. The Honorable Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland, received an honorary Fellowship at the event.
Mr. Whitman provides business advice and dispute resolution services in the areas of admiralty and maritime matters, civil litigation, and construction law. He is a member of the Forum on the Construction Industry of the American Bar Association and serves on the Board of Directors of the Maritime Law Association of the United States. He presently serves as chair of Ober|Kaler’s Disputes Resolution Section and co-chair of its Complex Civil Litigation Practice Group, and is a member of the Firm’s Board of Directors. For many years he served as Chair of Ober|Kaler’s Admiralty Department.
Active in both professional and community organizations, he has served as Treasurer of the Propeller Club of the United States, Port of Baltimore, as a member of the Vestry of St. David’s Episcopal Church in Roland Park, and as a member of the Board of the Roland Park Community Foundation.
Recognized for his significant contributions in the area of maritime law, he has appeared in every edition of the peer-nominated publication, “The Best Lawyers in America,” since 1989.
After graduating from Princeton University (AB, 1969) with honors, Mr. Whitman served on active duty in the United States Naval Reserve, leaving the Navy in 1973 as a Lieutenant, Qualified in Submarines. He joined Ober|Kaler as an associate upon graduating from the University of Virginia School of Law (JD) in 1976 and became a principal in the Firm in 1984.
The American College of Trial Lawyers was established in 1950 to recognize excellence in trial lawyers. It serves to improve the standards of trial practice, the administration of justice and the ethics of the profession.
