LAWFUEL – The Legal Newswire – The piercing of nipples and genitals will be banned in Australia for people under 18 under new legislation.
The proposed state laws would also require written permission from a parent or guardian for children under 16 to have “non-intimate” body piercings, such as ears, tongue or nose rings or studs.
Attorney-General Rob Hulls said so-called “intimate” piercings could create an enormous range of health problems, and were inappropriate for those under 18.
“As a Government, we want to protect kids in this state, and the last thing we want is for kids, when they get older, to regret undergoing this kind of procedure,” he said.
Last month, a Nationals MP, Damian Drum, delayed the introduction of a private member’s bill that would have seen people under 18 require written permission for any type of piercing.
Yesterday, Mr Hulls criticised that bill, saying it had several flaws.
