Barrister Appointed To Investigate SOULS Jelly Wrestling & Other Camp Complaints

david simDunedin lawyer David Sim of Downie Stewart has been appointed as an independent barrister to review complaints about inappropriate behaviour – which means jelly wrestling, nudity, excessive drinking etc – at the university’s second-year law camps.

The review is expected to “take months” according to an ODT report and will focus on past camps operated by Otago University Law Students (SOULS).

The university said the investigation was not into any particular individual but rather to review the events so as to ensure the students were promoting “a safe, inclusive and fun university culture into the future.”

No other complaints had been received since the camps hit the headlines in March over the jelly wrestling complaint, but the university had received 11 “communications” about them since then, a university spokesperson told the ODT.

None of them were “expressed as a formal complaint”, she said.

The university would make no further comment about “any individuals, student or staff, until this review is complete”.
