Baker & McKenzie Partner Named Honorary Member of the Ontario Medical Association

Toronto, May 13, 2009 (LAWFUEL) – Baker & McKenzie labour and employment partner Stewart Saxe was recognized as an Honorary Member of the Ontario Medical Association (OMA) for his work with the OMA. Currently, there are 10 recipients of this honour, and Mr. Saxe is one of the few lawyers to receive the recognition.

The exclusive membership is awarded to recipients who have made eminent contributions in science and/or humanities, such as service to OMA, the medical profession, medical science or common good. Since December 2004, Mr. Saxe has assisted the OMA in planning and carrying out Physician Services Agreement negotiations with the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, as well as other assignments. In 2008, the OMA Board appointed Mr. Saxe as Lead Negotiator and Negotiations Adviser for the OMA Negotiations Committee.

Mr. Saxe is a member of the Firm’s Labour, Employment and Employee Benefits practice. He has extensive experience in collective agreement negotiation and application, advice on maintaining positive relationships with employees and unions, representation before Labour Boards and Arbitrators, advice and representation regarding the Employment Standards Act and the Human Rights Code and advice on hiring and firing of executives. He was one of five lawyers identified as leading labour negotiator (management side) in Canada in the August 2006 issue of Canadian Lawyer magazine.

“We congratulate Stewart for this well-deserved honour,” said Jim Holloway, Managing Partner of Baker & McKenzie Toronto. “His work on behalf of the OMA involved significant and complex issues and the results generated served to confirm his reputation as a leading strategist and negotiator in this country.”

Founded in 1880 as an association of the province’s physicians, the Ontario Medical Association now represents the political, clinical and economic interests of the province’s medical profession. OMA is governed by a Council composed of more than 250 delegates representing 77 territorial divisions and by the Association’s Board of Directors.
