BALTIMORE, MD – October 4, 2005 – LAWFUEL – The Law News Network – National law firm Ober|Kaler announced the recipients of its John Chandler Baldwin Community Grants Program. The firm awarded $35,000 in grants to three nonprofit community organizations serving the Baltimore and Washington, DC metro areas. Named in honor of its former chair John C. Baldwin, Ober|Kaler will award a $10,000 grant to both Partnership for Learning and Community Family Life Services. A special $15,000 will go to Carson Scholars Fund. In addition to awarding the grant, employees of the firm will volunteer their time to Carson Scholars Fund.
A committee comprised of principals, associates, and staff members of the firm selected the following organizations for their specific programs focused on enriching the lives of underprivileged children, improving living standards for lower income families with children, and creating educational opportunities for at-risk youth. The committee based its selection on perceived need, the community served, and the impact the grant would have on the selected organization.
Partnership for Learning, Inc. to further its work identifying first-time juvenile offenders in Baltimore City who are struggling in school. Working in conjunction with Baltimore City legal and education agencies, the program offers tutoring, mentoring, and motivational services in lieu of prosecution.
Community Family Life Services, Inc. for its Youth Education & Advocacy program, which provides one-on-one tutoring with an emphasis on math and reading. The program benefits low-income and homeless children living in and around housing projects in Washington, D.C.
Carson Scholars Fund, Inc. for its Ben Carson Reading Room Project. This program enhances existing reading curricula in select elementary and middle schools and helps students improve reading proficiency.
