(August 23, 2010, Washington, D.C.) – Reed Smith LLP today announced the addition of leading IP strategist Marc Kaufman as a partner in its firmwide Intellectual Property Group. The former Nixon Peabody IP patents partner will be resident in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office.

“Marc has achieved a very high national profile in the IP community for his work advising clients on the management of intellectual property assets, including patent monetization and licensing strategies,” said Jim Hultquist, Chair of Reed Smith’s Intellectual Property Group. “Marc’s dual focus on strategic counseling and patent prosecution is well aligned with the work done in our Silicon Valley office by Carina Tan and Craig Opperman and we already share several key clients.”

Intellectual Asset Management (IAM) magazine named Kaufman to its IAM 250 – A Guide to the World’s Leading IP Strategists in 2009 and 2010. In 2009, Reed Smith’s Craig Opperman, was also selected to that list as one of “The World’s Leading IP Strategists.” Kaufman was also recognized as an outstanding IP lawyer by clients responding in the 2006 Client Service All-Star national survey conducted by BTI Consulting Group, Inc.

Mr. Kaufman specializes in developing structured procedures for defining and executing intellectual property strategies that are aligned with clients’ overall business strategies. His work spans a range of technical fields including reconfigurable processors, content aggregation and targeting, digital rights management, database technology, document retrieval, search engine technology, and data mining. Patent portfolios secured by Marc have been widely licensed by major corporations.

“Reed Smith is a growing and very successful firm that offers the right practice expertise which will allow me to provide my clients with a full range of services to support their overall business goals,” said Mr. Kaufman. “Its Silicon Valley presence, and firmwide strength in IP litigation, venture and corporate, and media and advertising practices are a perfect fit for my clients needs, and I am looking forward to helping grow these practices at Reed Smith.”

Kaufman had been a partner at Nixon Peabody for 11 years, including one year with a boutique IP firm that joined Nixon Peabody in 2000. Prior to that, he was a member of another IP boutique.

A 1984 mechanical engineering graduate of Boston University in 1984, Kaufman received hiss J.D. from The Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law in 1992. He is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and Pennsylvania.

“We are looking forward to Marc’s contribution to the growth of the firm’s IP practice in DC,” said A. Scott Bolden, Reed Smith’s Washington, D.C., Managing Partner. “We know that many of our clients will greatly benefit from his strategic counsel and expertise.”

Reed Smith’s Intellectual Property Group today includes more than 100 lawyers in the firm’s offices in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and France.
