LAWFUEL – The Law News Network – Well known restructuring lawyer Nick Segal is to join international law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer as a partner in the firm’s global restructuring and insolvency (R&I) group in mid-August, based in London.

‘We are very excited to have a lawyer of Nick’s standing join our R&I practice. It is rare that a lawyer of Nick’s calibre becomes available and his extensive international experience, particularly in working for creditors, will complement our existing restructuring practice,’ said Konstantin Mettenheimer, co-senior partner, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer.

Sandy Shandro, head of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer’s R&I group, commented, ‘We have a very strong international R&I practice, which will be further enhanced with Nick’s extensive cross-border experience. Nick is comfortable dealing with the multijurisdictional aspects of any transaction and this is extremely important to our clients and in our marketplace. We are delighted to have him on board.

‘The timing of Nick’s arrival is also right as the business cycle is at a point where there is likely to be an upturn in restructuring work in the not too distant future,’ Sandy Shandro continued. ‘Our existing strong local bankruptcy expertise in the world’s major financial centres, combined with Nick’s proven experience of acting for creditors and his understanding of the methodology and approach of US investors, puts us in an excellent position to offer our clients the very best mix of expertise in this area,’ he added.

Nick Segal is a prominent restructuring lawyer who has worked in both London and New York. He has considerable experience of international restructurings and was involved in the worldwide restructuring of, and subsequent bid for, the Heron Group (acting for the company); the US$1bn restructuring of Thai Telecom and Telecommunications (TT&T) (acting for the secured lenders committee), and the restructuring of the Telewest Communications Group (acting for the senior lenders). He has also advised on all kinds of insolvency proceedings, as well as in relation to contentious matters and litigation, particularly cross border litigation, arising in connection with his banking, restructuring and insolvency practice.

Mr Segal has been based in New York since 2003 with Davis Polk and Wardwell, where he was a partner and involved in a wide variety of transactions and advisory engagements covering all aspects of US bankruptcy law, acting for creditors, debtors and other parties in interest. Before joining Davis Polk, he was a partner in Allen & Overy’s restructuring practice in London for 15 years. He completed his MA at Oxford University (First Class) in 1979, qualified in London in 1982 and was admitted to the New York Bar in 2004.
