LAWFUEL – UK Legal News – McGrigors’ award winning tax litigation team has been joined by the highly accomplished HMRC tax barrister, Dennis Dixon, formerly one of its key opponents in many contentious cases.
Dixon has been one of the principal legal advisers and litigators for HMRC’s Anti Avoidance Group, and the Special Civil Investigations Office including its Offshore Fraud Project and his joining McGrigors is a major coup for the firm.
A veteran of HMRC for eight years Dixon has advised on some notable high profile cases including landmark Court of Appeal decisions, the major capital loss selling settlements, relevant discounted securities, and representing HMRC at the Special Commissioners in the line of recent landmark information powers cases in relation to banks. His work in progress included major cases in areas as different as legal privilege, film schemes and the taxation of currency swaps.
The news comes soon after the announcement of the pending arrival of white collar crime barrister, Jonathan Fisher QC in September, and significantly enhances the McGrigors armoury.
James Bullock, Head of Tax Litigation and Regulatory at McGrigors said:
“I am delighted to welcome Dennis to the team. His experience within HMRC Solicitor’s Office working on cases involving tax avoidance and offshore fraud will be enormously useful in helping us to achieve the very best results for our clients. This appointment bolsters our deep expertise right across the field of contentious tax, from dispute resolution before the Special Commissioners and the higher courts, through indirect tax dispute resolution, to advise in relation to the legal aspects of compliance and enforcement and advice in relation to criminal investigations.”
Dennis Dixon added:
“I have enjoyed working on many high profile anti-avoidance and regulatory cases during my time at the Revenue and HMRC and now I am looking forward to dealing with my past colleagues from the other side of the fence. HMRC is conducting a concerted attack on avoidance and this is an exciting time to be joining the leading tax litigation team in the UK.”
