London, 28 May 2004 – LAWFUEL – Arnold & Porter LLP announced today that senior and well-known intellectual property (IP) litigator Clive Thorne will join the firm’s London office as a partner on 1 September 2004. Mr Thorne has extensive experience in the UK and Asia in a wide range of IP and technology litigation and arbitration involving patents, trademarks, copyrights, design rights, trade secrets, and e-commerce disputes. “Clive has an impressive track record,” said Lee Narrow, head of the firm’s London office. “His experience and reputation in London will strengthen our ability to handle large, multi-jurisdictional IP disputes and expand our IP litigation services for our European and US-based clients.”

Mr Thorne has been in private practise since 1975 and is a recognized authority on IP litigation and arbitration. He has published numerous articles and a number of books in his specialty area, User’s Guide to Copyright and Intellectual Property—the New Law, and he lectures widely on IP matters. His stature in London and in the IP field are reflected by his membership of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and Nominet Domain Name Resolution Panels, whose panelist arbitrators handle domain name dispute resolution.

Mr Thorne’s has worked with clients in the computer, technology, electronics, retail, toy, food and drug, leisure, media, and financial institutions industries. He has acted in some of the leading IP and technology disputes of recent years including Lego v. Tyco, Halifax v. UDL, Classic FM v. Robin Ray, and Alan Clark v. Associated Newspapers, Mattel Inc v. Tomy, and Marks & Spencer v. Cotterell. Mr Thorne holds both an MA and a BA in Law from Trinity Hall, University of Cambridge, and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

Mr Thorne joins more than 100 attorneys in Arnold & Porter’s intellectual property and technology practise, which is located throughout all of the firm’s offices. In London, the IP and technology litigation team regularly advises clients on matters including the protection and enforcement of patents and trademark rights, software infringement, information technology contract law, and Internet and domain name disputes.
