NEW YORK, November 21, 2005 – LAWFUEL – The Law News Network – The international law firm Greenberg Traurig, LLP announced today that Ambassador Martin J. Silverstein has joined the firm as Senior Counsel. Prior to joining Greenberg Traurig, Silverstein served as United States Ambassador to the Oriental Republic of Uruguay for four years through August 2005.
During his tenure, Ambassador Silverstein facilitated a $1.5 billion US Treasury loan to salvage Uruguay’s banking system; worked to reopen US markets to banned Uruguayan beef; signed an Open Skies Agreement; and engineered the signing of the only Bilateral Investment Treaty of the Bush Administration. The Ambassador’s actions led the President of Uruguay to publicly credit President Bush with saving his government and preventing economic collapse.
The United States Government decorated the Ambassador with the Superior Honor Award Medal, and The Foreign Affairs Award for Public Service for his “performance with exceptional dedication and distinction.” The Republic of Uruguay decorated the Ambassador with the Medalla de la Republica Oriental del Uruguay, rank of Gran Oficial, the highest honor ever bestowed on an American citizen.
Prior to serving his country overseas, Silverstein, an attorney for over 25 years, was a litigator who represented multi-national businesses and served on the Federal Judicial Nominating Commission (EDPa) where he evaluated candidates for the Federal bench.
“Ambassador Silverstein’s vast experience will be an invaluable resource to our local, regional and global clients and will further augment our ability to serve their specialized needs in a collaborative and business-oriented style,” said Richard A. Rosenbaum, Managing Shareholder of the New York office and National Operating Shareholder.
Silverstein also served for eight years as a Reserve Police Officer in Elizabeth, NJ and was awarded the Philadelphia Police Department Citizens Commendation for Bravery and the US Congress Certificate of Merit for service to veterans. He received his B.A. from Rutgers College and J.D. from Temple Law School where he was a senior member of the Law Review.
