Palo Alto, Calif.—Foley & Lardner LLP announced today that Tom M. Moran has joined the firm’s Silicon Valley Office, bringing his extensive pharmaceutical patent experience to further expand the firm’s Life Sciences practice. Moran is special counsel in the Intellectual Property Department, Chemical & Pharmaceutical Practice Group, IP Litigation Practice Group and Life Sciences Industry Team.

“Tom’s addition to the firm is part of a series of strategic moves that Foley & Lardner has made to strengthen our national Life Sciences practice,” said Stephen Bent, co-chair of Foley & Lardner’s Life Sciences Industry Team. “His experience as a patent attorney in the pharmaceutical industry will benefit our clients in both the rapidly expanding Silicon Valley market and nationwide.”

Moran’s addition follows the firm’s acquisition in January of the Boston office of Epstein, Becker & Green, increasing Foley & Lardner’s life sciences presence across the country. In 2004 the firm also opened New York and Silicon Valley offices as part of its strategic plan to expand in key life sciences markets.

Moran focuses his practice on chemical, biochemical, drug delivery, and medical device patent law. He advises on patent validity, infringement, trade secrets and licensing issues, as well as pharmaceutical patent litigation matters and patent interferences. He also counsels both large and small biopharmaceutical and medical device companies to provide guidance on patent strategy and prosecution, trade secret evaluation and litigation assistance. In addition, Moran has dealt with patent-related issues regarding alternative energy sources such as fuel cells, solar power, and clean-burning coal.

Prior to joining Foley & Lardner, Moran worked as special counsel for Cooley Godward LLP in its Patent Prosecution and Counseling Group. Before joining Cooley, Moran was at Syntex (U.S.A.) Inc., where he started as a patent attorney and was promoted to director of the Patent Law Department for the U.S. Pharmaceuticals Group. Moran also previously worked for Shell Oil Company, first as a chemist and later as a patent agent and patent attorney.

Moran received his law degree from Golden Gate University School of Law and his bachelor’s degree from Beloit College in Wisconsin. He is a member of the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the American Bar Association, and the state bars of California and Texas.
