Steptoe Attorney Appointed to Nat’l Inst. of Military Justice Board of Advisors

LawFuel.com – 1 June 2010 – Michael J. Navarre, special counsel in the Litigation Department at Steptoe & Johnson LLP, has been appointed to the Board of Advisors of the National Institute of Military Justice (NIMJ).

Organized in 1991, NIMJ is a non-profit corporation whose mission is to encourage the fair administration of justice within the military justice system, as well as public understanding of the system. Its advisors participate in filing briefs and position statements on behalf of NIMJ related to topics such as the law of armed conflict, international humanitarian law, and court martial reform.

The NIMJ’s Board of Advisors is made up of practitioners, law professors and former military officers that regularly make statements about legislation and regulations that are important to military justice. Recently NIMJ voiced its objection to proposed legislation authorizing the Defense Department Inspector General to investigate military and pro bono defense attorneys representing detainees at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, arguing the law would affect the attorneys’ ability to zealously defend their clients.

Mr. Navarre is primarily a government contracts attorney, but is also involved in complex commercial litigation, white collar criminal investigations, and internal investigations. He has a particular interest and background in laws and regulations that relate to contingency operation and battlespace contracting. Before joining Steptoe, he served as a judge advocate in the United States Navy and has recently served as a Navy Reserve judge advocate.
