November 17, 2005 – LAWFUEL – The Law news Network – Triathlete, marathoner, rock climber, equestrienne; brain tumor survivor; international lawyer-turned yogi – Kimberly Fowler is more than your typical yoga instructor. Now Fowler, owner of YAS Yoga and Spinning in Los Angeles, has been signed by fitness giant Nike as a spokesperson-athlete. She will serve as the sports giant’s new face of modern yoga.

A rising figure in the New Yoga movement since opening YAS in 2001, Fowler is proof positive that yoga can help to maintain, improve, and even restore health. In 1982, while a second year law student, Fowler was hit by a car during a bike race; she was first introduced to yoga as a form of physical therapy, and it healed and realigned her totally.

Then, in 1983, she was diagnosed with a terminal, inoperable brain tumor. Determined to get well, she incorporated yoga into her treatment plan and recovery. More than twenty years and countless marathons and triathlons later, Kimberly is still cancer free, and credits her yoga practice with helping her develop both the inner and physical strength she needed to save her life.

Today, at the helm of her five year-old company, Fowler teaches an empowering form of yoga designed to challenge the body and whole person – whether for enhanced athletic performance or simply to get and stay in shape. Her signature Yoga for Athletes® philosophy and classes, along with the Yin-Yang buzz of her original Yoga and Spinning® combination workout, encourage what she calls “athletes of all levels” to learn the benefits of yoga as part of the world of sports. Her techniques and sequencing show yoga to be not only a modern workout tool, but also one designed to improve the body’s overall readiness to run, swim, cycle, race, or hit a ball. In her view, yoga isn’t just for yogis anymore; it’s for anyone who plays.

Kimberly Fowler has been affiliated with Nike since 2001: first participating with YAS in Nike “fitness academies”; and since 2003, working as a yoga expert for the company, verifying poses and props for the Nike catalog. Fowler’s official role with Nike will now include: helping to position the company’s yoga commitment towards a core sports audience; consulting on the yoga apparel program and participating in product trials; making appearances as a Nike athlete; and appearing in editorial campaigns.
