Recognized for his outstanding service and commitment to the domestic violence community

WASHINGTON, D.C.– LAWFUEL – The Law News Wire – Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo, P.C. attorney Fernando Laguarda was recently honored at the Women Empowered Against Domestic Violence (WEAVE) 10th Anniversary Gala, for his exceptional dedication to the domestic violence community.

Founded in 1997 by American University law students, WEAVE works closely with adult and teen survivors of relationship violence and abuse. The organization provides an innovative range of legal, counseling, economic and educational services that leads survivors to utilize their inner and community resources, achieve safety for themselves and their children and live empowered lives.

Fernando Laguarda received the organization’s 2007 “Watts Empowerment Award,” along with Robert J. Spagnoletti, a partner with Schertler & Onorato, LLP. The Watts award was established in 2006 to honor change agents whose contributions helped achieve hard-won victories. The award is presented to individuals, groups, and organizations that demonstrate exceptional dedication to the domestic violence community.

Throughout his career at Mintz Levin, Mr. Laguarda has devoted his pro bono efforts to many domestic violence prevention non-profit organizations. He has previously served as General Counsel and is presently Chairman of the National Network to End Domestic Violence Fund (“NNEDV Fund”), which is the leading provider of technical assistance, training and education to advocates, professionals and others who encounter or serve battered women in their work and communities.

Under his leadership, in partnership with the AOL Time Warner Foundation and the Mary Kay Ash Charitable Foundation, the NNEDV Fund successfully launched its groundbreaking “Safe and Strategic Technology Project.” Through these efforts, victims of relationship violence and the advocates who serve them are being trained to use technology and the Internet in a safe and secure manner.

Mr. Laguarda is a member in the firm’s Federal Section with a diverse practice cutting across many business sectors. He provides antitrust counseling with respect to mergers, joint ventures, network formation, licensing and strategic planning. He represents multi-provider healthcare systems, media and telecommunications providers and Internet companies in state and federal antitrust investigations. He advises on compliance with Federal Trade Commission, Federal Communications Commission and state privacy regulations. He regularly helps clients develop and implement email and electronic document security and retention programs.
