Charles F. Schill, an experienced international trade and patent litigator, has joined the international trade and investment and technology, Internet and media departments of Steptoe & Johnson LLP’s Washington office as a partner. He has nearly three decades of law firm and government practice experience in the areas of intellectual property and international trade. He has argued a patent case successfully before the US Supreme Court and litigated more than 60 unfair trade practice cases under Section 337 of the Tariff Act of 1930 at the US International Trade Commission.
Mr. Schill served as a patent attorney for a large contract research institute and as senior counsel at the US International Trade Commission. His practice has focused on international trade and intellectual property matters, including litigation of trademark, copyright, patent, and unfair competition cases in the federal courts and before the US International Trade Commission. He has represented clients before the US Customs Service and in anti-dumping, countervailing duty and escape clause investigations. His experience includes negotiating and drafting foreign and domestic license agreements, as well as counseling clients on developing and enforcing their intellectual property portfolios.
Mr. Schill has an exceptional record of service to the legal profession, including co-chairing a Special Committee of the District of Columbia Bar on protective orders under Title VI and Section 337 of the Tariff Act of 1930, and serving the Federal Circuit Bar Association as CIT/ITC Committee Chair from 1994 to 1998, and on the Board of Governors from 1998 to the present where he is President Elect. He has chaired the committees on the International Trade Commission, Individual Inventors, and Communications Law for the American Intellectual Property Law Association.
A 1973 graduate of Capital University College Law Center, Mr. Schill also earned a B.S. degree in Chemistry from Le Moyne College, Syracuse, New York. During the course of his legal education, he also attended the International Law Program in Mexico City and the Syracuse University College of Law. He is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and Ohio, as well as before the US Supreme Court, the Court of International Trade, the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and for the District of Columbia, and the US Patent and Trademark Office.
He is a sought-after speaker for bar and industry conferences and seminars in the United States and abroad on international trade regulation, the WTO, and intellectual property protection and litigation.
