(CHICAGO) February 7, 2006 – LAWFUEL – The Law News Network – DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary US LLP has announced that it is establishing the Howard E. Kane Award to recognize exceptional service provided by members of the firm’s Real Estate group. The firm also announced that the first award was presented to its namesake, Howard E. Kane, for his leadership both within DLA Piper and in the legal profession throughout his career.
The Kane Award will be granted periodically in recognition of exceptional service by members of DLA Piper’s Real Estate Department to the firm, the legal profession, and the public. The award was given to Kane on January 28 at the firm’s 2006 U.S. Real Estate Retreat in Marina del Rey, Calif.
“We are pleased to introduce this new award honoring our most dedicated attorneys,” said Jay Epstien, Chair of the U.S. Real Estate Department. “We are also gratified to honor Howard for his years of devotion to the firm, the profession, and many charitable causes.”
Kane, who is a partner based in the firm’s Chicago office, first joined DLA Piper’s predecessor firm, Rudnick & Wolfe, in 1984. He helped expand the firm’s Chicago real estate platform and began building the firm’s national reputation through his representation of department stores, developers and lenders in the shopping center industry who were engaged in business throughout the U.S.
Kane has been a mentor to both firm leadership and young attorneys and has been a major force in recruiting many lawyers to the firm. He also has taken a leadership role in the legal profession, chairing the ICSC Law Conference three times, serving as chair of the Anglo-American Real Property Institute in 1997 and providing counsel to the elected leaders of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers, the ABA Real Property and Probate and Trust Section and numerous other organizations.
He has actively supported many civic causes and numerous Jewish charities. In 1986, the American Jewish Committee awarded him the prestigious Judge Learned Hand Award.
