Chicago—Foley & Lardner LLP announced today it has pledged more than $250,000 to help the victims of the December 26 tsunami in Southeast Asia. The contributions, which include individual contributions and a $100,000 matching donation from the firm, will benefit the American Red Cross and several other relief organizations.
“Foley & Lardner is committed to providing relief efforts for the tsunami victims, not only as individuals, but also as a firm,” said Ralf Boer, Chairman and CEO of Foley & Lardner. “We recognize the financial and other contributions made by members of the Foley family, as this unprecedented human tragedy calls for unprecedented action.”
A number of Foley & Lardner attorneys have spearheaded their own efforts to raise money for the tsunami victims.
Business law attorney Fred Feldkamp was vacationing in Phuket, Thailand, with his family when the tsunami struck a beach about 100 yards from where they were staying. He and his family, who were safely above the waves, recorded the tsunami as it hit. When Fred and his wife returned to the States, they were invited to participate in an American Red Cross tsunami relief telethon in South Bend, Ind., and share what they learned. The telethon raised $65,000, a 260 percent increase over prior pledges to the local chapter.
Additionally, a half dozen members of the Chicago office worked with the nonprofit music venue HotHouse/Center for International Performance and Exhibition to hold two tsunami benefit relief concerts. The first was held on January 9 and raised $12,000, and the second will be held on January 28.
