(Dallas)—The Commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services has appointed Dallas lawyer James “Mac” Stewart to a six-year term as a member of the Texas Medical Disclosure Panel.
The policy-making group, made up of attorneys and physicians from around the state, was created by the Texas Legislature to draft and implement the rules which govern the informed consent process. The panel meets several times a year in Austin, and sets standards for doctors to follow when explaining the risks and benefits of certain medical procedures to their patients. Mr. Stewart is one of three lawyers in the group.
“It’s an honor to be asked to serve the people of Texas in this fashion,” says Mr. Stewart, a name partner in the health law firm of Stewart & Stimmel, based in Dallas. “Anything that we can do to enhance the dialogue between doctors and patients is a good thing, and I’m proud to have the opportunity to contribute to that process.”
Mr. Stewart has extensive experience in the field of health law in general, and with regard to matters involving informed consent, specifically. He has written and lectured on the topic.
