LAWFUEL – The Legal Newswire – Defending the rule of law in the face of global terrorism, political instability and the expanding powers of government is one of the greatest challenges facing the legal profession today, Law Council President Tim Bugg said on the eve of an inaugural conference showcasing this topic.
Some of the most respected legal minds from Australia and abroad will gather in Brisbane tomorrow for the conference, titled “Rule of Law: Challenges of a Changing World.”
Mr Bugg said, “The rule of law is today under threat locally and globally, and the responsibility to come to its defence is resting on the shoulders of the legal profession.”
“This conference will place the spotlight on a range of issues relevant to defending and preserving the rule of law in the current climate of global and domestic uncertainty,” Mr Bugg said.
Speakers include Sir Gerard Brennan QC, the Immediate Past President of the American Bar Association, Karen Mathis, NSW Supreme Court Justice James Spigelman, former Queensland Premier Wayne Goss and Tax Commissioner Michael D’Ascenzo.
The conference is an initiative of the Law Council, Queensland Law Society, Bar Association of Queensland and LAWASIA.
“Rule of Law: Challenges of a Changing World” will be held from 31 August – 1 September at the Banco Court, Second Floor, Supreme Court, George Street, Brisbane.
Mr Bugg will officially open the conference at 9.15am tomorrow.
