Foley Expands IP Practice in Tokyo with Philippe Riesen

TOKYO – Foley & Lardner LLP announced today that Philippe Riesen has joined the firm’s Intellectual Property Department and Chemical, Biotechnology & Pharmaceutical Practice as a partner in the Tokyo office.

Riesen has been assisting Japanese companies with U.S. patent litigation and counseling for more than 25 years.

He is experienced in a wide range of intellectual property disciplines, including U.S. and multi-district litigation and dispute resolution; America Invents Act (AIA) post-grant reviews before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO); licensing strategy, drafting and negotiation; commercialization and technology transfer; product and invention due diligence and valuation; patent landscaping and monetization; patent portfolio management; patent prosecution; and regulatory advice and strategies.

“Philippe’s arrival expands our global patent bench in patent litigation and prosecution. Having his boots-on-the ground presence as an experienced litigator and registered U.S. patent attorney based in Tokyo will be an invaluable resource to our Japanese clients,” said Michele Simkin, chair of the firm’s Intellectual Property Department.

Riesen’s technical background is in biochemistry. With his prior experience working in-house at a major pharmaceutical company and litigating numerous Hatch-Waxman cases, he has a particular interest in the pharmaceutical and medical device industry, focusing on litigation, due diligence and life-cycle management. Riesen has also represented companies in intellectual property disputes covering a wide range of technologies ranging from chemicals and bio chemicals, biotechnology, polymers and plastics, to electronics and turbine technology.

“As our clients in Japan seek to enter new markets, they will benefit from Philippe’s knowledge of global intellectual property challenges and opportunities. His experience working with pharmaceutical companies will help expand Foley’s already prominent industry presence in the region,” said Etsuo Doi, managing partner of Foley’s Tokyo office.

Prior to joining Foley, Riesen was a partner at Hogan Lovells and also served as in-house counsel to a major Japanese pharmaceutical company.
