Former Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Carlucci Brings Significant Trial Experience; Carlucci Beginning Trial on Unusual Criminal Tax Case This Week
San Francisco (LAWFUEL) — Foley & Lardner LLP today announced that trial lawyer Thomas F. Carlucci has joined the firm as a partner in the San Francisco office, working with the Securities Litigation & White Collar Defense and General Commercial Litigation Practices. Prior to joining Foley, Carlucci was a partner at DLA Piper US LLP.
Earlier in his career, Carlucci was a federal prosecutor for more than 10 years, serving as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in San Francisco and a trial lawyer in the Tax Division of the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ). Carlucci also earned the U.S. Attorney General’s prestigious John Marshall Award for Litigation for successfully prosecuting one of the most significant tax evasion cases in the history of the DOJ.
Already handling his next federal trial, Carlucci began trial on February 24 in a federal criminal case involving a state estate tax issue that the U.S. Attorney’s Office has unusually charged as mail fraud, alleging that the defendant fraudulently deprived the state of tax revenues.
Since entering private practice, Carlucci has focused on representing corporations, organizations and individuals in white collar crime matters, as well as civil and criminal tax disputes.
He also has extensive experience handling antitrust and regulatory matters for clients in a variety of industries, which includes conducting internal investigations and responding to government enforcement actions.
“Tom is nationally recognized for his trial experience with the DOJ, as well as the private sector,” said Michael J. Tuteur, chair of Foley’s national Litigation Department. “As trial counsel in more than 50 cases, we look forward to the leadership that Tom will provide as we continue to expand our national ligation practice.”
“With an emphasis on tax disputes and other government enforcement actions, Tom’s experience leading high-profile criminal and civil defense matters is also particularly important to our clients amidst these unprecedented economic times,” added Tuteur.
“Tom is an important addition as we continue to attract more litigators to our already deep team of experienced federal trial attorneys,” explained Pamela L. Johnston, chair of Foley’s White Collar Defense Practice. “Tom’s unique background will further strengthen our white collar defense and corporate compliance and enforcement practices, and we look forward to his contributions here.”
