Following July’s news that Scott Bache joined Clifford Chance as a Consultant focusing on restructuring and distressed debt, the international law firm has just announced a further appointment to its successful Distressed Debt team as well as the Real Estate team.

Gary Hand joined the Tokyo office of Clifford Chance from Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker on 17 September to head the real estate practice in Tokyo. Gary will be advising international investment funds in the structuring of acquisitions and financings of hard asset portfolios in Japan as well as advising clients on NPL portfolio work.

Clifford Chance has a strong track record in Distressed Debt and NPL work across Asia, particularly in China, Taiwan and Korea. Recent highlights include: advising on the Huarong portfolio auction, the first distressed portfolio sold by one of the four AMCs in China to go through the new approval process; representing one of the bidders for the Chaio Tung Bank portfolio of NPLs in Taiwan and acting for an international investment bank on a number of purchases of NPL portfolios in Korea and subsequent securitisations.

Evan Cohen, Head of Clifford Chance’s Asian Distressed Debt practice, commented:
” We have been extremely busy on Distressed Debt and NPL work recently and I am delighted to welcome Gary to our group. I am convinced that his skills and background will be well received by our clients and contribute to the success of the practice “.
