Heroin found at Sydney airport
(LAWFUEL) – A 37-year-old German national will face Sydney Central Local Court today charged with allegedly importing more than 800 grams of heroin concealed in the false bottom of a suitcase.
The man was stopped by Customs officers at Sydney International Airport when he arrived on a flight from Dubai yesterday (15 September).
An x-ray of the man’s suitcase revealed an image consistent with possible drug concealment.
After drilling into the suitcase and discovering a white powder, officers conducted initial tests that indicated the presence of heroin.
Further forensic testing on the suitcase will determine the exact weight and purity of the drug.
The man was referred to the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and charged with importing a marketable quantity of a border-controlled drug (heroin) contrary to section 307.2 of the Criminal Code Act (1995).
The maximum penalty for this offence is 25 years imprisonment and/or a $550,000 fine.
