Montgomery, the former world-record holder in the 100 metres, and Gaines are accused of drug violations by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. Both are appealing proposed lifetime bans based on evidence gathered in the criminal probe of the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative. The Court of Arbitration for Sport said Thursday it would announce its rulings next Wednesday.
CAS also said it would resume hearings in February in the Olympic drug-testing case of Greek sprinters Kostas Kenteris and Katerina Thanou.
CAS held two days of hearings on the case in October. The court will hear more witnesses and closing arguments beginning Feb. 22
Kenteris and Thanou missed drug tests on Aug. 12, 2004 – the eve of the Athens Olympics. They spent four days in a hospital after claiming they were injured in a motorcycle crash. They later withdrew from the games.
The Greek track and field federation cleared them in March of deliberately evading the tests, saying they hadn’t been properly notified. The International Association of Athletics Federations appealed to CAS in a bid to overturn the Greek ruling and impose minimum two-year bans.
Meantime, a Greek prosecutor has recommended the sprinters stand trial for allegedly faking the motorcycle accident.
At the 2000 Sydney Olympics, Kenteris won the gold medal in the 200 metres, while Thanou came second in the 100.
