LawFuel – Allegations that Australian swimming great Ian Thorpe returned a drug test in May 2006 that contained higher than normal levels of banned hormones, saw the swimmer tell press he plans to fight the accusations. He said he was “deeply alarmed” at the leak and was considering legal action.
A French newspaper reported that the test contained higher than normal levels of two hormones including testosterone.
Thorpe, who was accompanied by his lawyeer, said he was shocked the result was leaked to the media.
“You know I didn’t know what to do, I didn’t know how to react, and you know I think I sat in my room you know kind of physically shaking because I didn’t understand it,” Thorpe said.
Thorpe told media he’s confident his name will be cleared, and he’s considering legal action against whoever leaked the results.
Thorpe said he didn’t think it was a coincidence that the test results were revealed during the world championships in his home country.
He suggested that three different groups could be responsible for leaking his name and results, an apparent reference to FINA, the Australia Sports Anti-Doping Agency and the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Thorpe said he is “deeply alarmed” about the leak.
