LAWFUEL – Law News Wire – British prosecutors could charge Andrei Lugovoi’s friend and business partner Dmitry Kovtun of involvement in the murder of former officer of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) Alexander Litvinenko, Interfax reports.

According to the materials of the criminal case, Kovtun is thought to be his accomplice, well-informed sources in Moscow and London told Interfax on Tuesday.

“It is likely that British prosecutors were guided by tactical motives when they decided not to bring charges against two Russians at once. It is possible that Kovtun ‘was put in store’ depending on the reaction of Russia to the request to extradite Lugovoi,” a source said.

Kovtun, together with Lugovoi, are mentioned in the materials of the criminal case sent through the Russian Foreign Ministry to the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office, he said. “No specific charges are brought against him. He is mentioned in the materials as a possible accomplice,” the source said.
