LAWFUEL – The Law News Network – Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP is pleased to announce that Shirley H. Buccieri, former General Counsel of Transamerica Corporation, is returning to the firm’s Palo Alto office as a partner. Buccieri specializes in merger and acquisition transactions as well as corporate and securities matters. It is a homecoming for Buccieri, who was a partner of the firm before she joined the diversified financial services company as its general counsel.

“Shirley’s broad range of skills, expertise and experience directly supports Gibson Dunn’s vision of a premier client service organization,” said Russell C. Hansen, the Partner in Charge of the firm’s Palo Alto office. “As general counsel of a Fortune 500 company, she was a sophisticated buyer of legal services and led transactions from the client side, all of which makes her a tremendous asset to our firm and our clients.”

“I am looking forward to returning to Gibson Dunn and using my unique perspective to help new and existing clients achieve their objectives,” said Buccieri. “There really is no better way to understand a client’s needs than by having been a client. Embarking on this next phase of my career with the help and support of the talented lawyers of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher is an exciting prospect.”

Buccieri was at Gibson Dunn from 1983 to 1995 and was part of the group that led the opening of the firm’s San Francisco office in 1987 and its Menlo Park (now Palo Alto) office in 1992. Buccieri left the firm in 1995 to become General Counsel of Transamerica, headquartered in San Francisco. In this role, Buccieri was responsible for legal affairs worldwide, as well as Transamerica’s public affairs. She also headed the Transamerica Foundation, overseeing grants to deserving non-profit organizations nationwide. In 1999, Buccieri was a critical part of the management team that negotiated the multi-billion dollar sale of Transamerica to Aegon, N.V., a Dutch insurance conglomerate. After the sale, she founded Willow Place Partners, a Menlo Park, Calif.-based corporate advisory firm, specializing in mergers and acquisitions. From 1973 to 1983, Buccieri held various technical and management positions at General Motors Corporation.

Buccieri holds a Juris Doctor, magna cum laude, from the University of Akron School of Law. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from Purdue University, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Buccieri serves on the Finance Council for the Archdiocese of San Francisco and has previously served on the Advisory Council for Purdue University’s School of Science.

Buccieri will join the firm’s 80 attorneys in the Palo Alto and San Francisco offices who represent clients ranging from Fortune 500 corporations to emerging growth companies. Clients in the Bay Area include amazon.com, Ask Jeeves, Cadence Design Systems, Cingular Wireless, CRH, Hewlett-Packard, Intel, Nortel Networks, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Sony Computer Entertainment America, St. Jude Medical, Thoratec, Wells Fargo, The Williams Companies and Xilinx.
