LawFuel- The Law News Wire – Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico, formally announcing his campaign for president today after four months of exploratory campaigning, billed himself as the leader the nation is seeking at a critical crossroad, the Chicago Tribune reports.
“The United States faces huge challenges both here and abroad, and I’m running for president because this nation needs a leader with a proven track record and an ability to bring people together,’’ Richardson, a Democrat, said in California today.
Richardson already has aired campaign television ads in an early caucus state, and already has debated the seven other already declared Democratic candidates for president. But today, in Los Angeles, the sole Hispanic American candidate in the 2008 contest for the White House formally announced his campaign.
Richardson, 59, has served as governor of New Mexico since 2003. He had served as secretary of energy and U.S. ambassador to the United Nations during the Clinton administration and served seven terms as a member of Congress from New Mexico. He has a law degree from Tufts University, where he also attended college.
