Dr Samuel Pisar AO, a most distinguished alumnus of the Melbourne Law School, will deliver a public lecture next week on the state of the European Union and its relation to Australia.
The event will take place in the Law Building in Pelham Street on Thursday, August 2 from 6pm.
The title of the lecture is ‘The State of The European Union’. Dr Pisar will reflect on the significance of the rejection of the European Constitutional Treaty; the essential bonds between Europe, Australia and America in an increasingly dangerous world; and Australia’s integration into the global economic and security system. The talk will also touch on Melbourne as the place of Dr Pisar’s physical, moral and intellectual redemption following the Holocaust.
Dean of the Law School, Professor Michael Crommelin, says that, “The evolution of the European Union over the last 50 years has been quite remarkable. Right now, however, it faces constitutional choices of great significance – not only for Europe, but also for the rest of the world.”
Dr Pisar graduated with an LLB (Hons) from the University of Melbourne in 1953, with the Rt Hon Sir Zelman Cowen as his mentor. He also holds doctorates from Harvard and the Sorbonne. He has been an intern for Australia at the United Nations in New York, as well as legal counsel to UNESCO in Paris and to many other governments, corporations, banks and humanitarian organisations across the globe.
