LAWFUEL – The Lawyer Newswire – Before he shot 73 on Saturday to stay in the hunt at 6-over-par, defending Masters champion Phil Mickelson had to persuade Masters officials not to disqualify him from the tournament. And one of those officials – the key man in Mickelson’s case – was America’s top lawyer-golfer (quote: WSJ Law Blog) Fred Ridley. Ridley, who told the Law Blog last year he shoots to a mere 0.8 handicap when he’s having a good day, is former USGA president and now president of the Masters competition and rules committees.
Mickelson’s problem was that his caddie allegedly put Mickelson’s golf bag in a position where it would block the sun from his ball, which was on the tee. Lawyer-President Ridley checked the tapes and took verbal evidence from Mickelson and caddie before deciding there was no biolation.
