LAWFUEL – The Legal Newswire – A leading Brisbane barrister who has helped improve Zimbabwe’s legal system has been appointed to the Queensland Supreme Court.
Former Australian Bar Association president Glenn Martin SC was admitted as a barrister in 1979 and appointed senior counsel in 1998.
The 51-year-old was one of the inaugural chairs of the International Council of Advocates and Barristers, which supports independent observers at trials in countries where legal practitioners are subject to oppression.
Since 2004, he has supported legal practitioners in Zimbabwe, whose lives and practice are often threatened.
He also worked in the Solomon Islands in the 1980s, where he appeared in the Supreme Court for the prime minister and attorney-general of the day.
As a barrister, Justice Martin’s civil practice concentrated on employment, administrative and constitutional law.
He was Australian Bar Association president in 2006-07 and Queensland Bar Association president from 2003 to 2005.
