LAWFUEL – The Legal Newswire – After months of speculation, former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson’s campaign says he will announce his official bid for the Republican presidential nomination on September 6.

Thompson, who has a lengthy film and television career, in addition to years of political service, is slated to confirm his intention during a 4:30 conference call with staff members on Thursday. Earlier this year, the former U.S. senator formed a presidential exploratory committee to gauge public support for his candidacy.

According to several reports, Thompson’s campaign says the official declaration will kick off with a tour of Iowa, South Carolina, New Hampshire, and Florida. However, Thompson is not slated to appear at the GOP debate in New Hampshire on Wednesday, Sept. 5.

Despite not officially declaring himself a candidate, Thompson has garnered significant support from the public, consistently ranking among the top three GOP candidates behind former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
